Phase 4 – Data Collection

Key Aspects of Data Collection

The data collection process has finally arrived and you are ready to record information. There are some guidelines to keep in mind during this process.

Preparation

• Leave nothing to chance! Have every data table ready to go. Have your script to read to participants perfected. Have your schedule mapped out. Leave NOTHING to chance during this phase.

Record Keeping

• WRITE DOWN EVERYTHING IN YOUR LAB NOTEBOOK! This cannot be understated. Everything that transpires must be directly recorded into your bound, lab notebook so that all of the information is in one single location

Trial Runs

• Make sure that you practice collecting data. Get some sample information and process this to make sure you will collect meaningful information.

Document the Process

• Take some pictures of the process of data collection. Be mindful of the process of what this looks like in reality. You will have to present your information later and this is a good way to journal how this part transpired.

Be Prepared for Surprises

• Despite all of your preparation, there is no way to predict what might happen along the way. Take a deep breath and solve whatever comes along. Remember to use all of your resources, including your teacher/mentor.

Reproducibility

• The goal of record keeping is to be able to REPRODUCE the experiment in the future. The notebook should be able to stand alone. Treat it as you would treat a diary, allow those from the future to follow in your footsteps.
