Chemistry Honors – Classes 14 & 15

Dates
- Period B: Monday, February 2nd / Tuesday, February 3rd
- Period D: Monday, February 2nd / Wednesday, February 4th
- Period G: Tuesday, February 3rd / Wednesday, February 4th
Day 1 – Strong Acids / Molarity / pH
- Strong acid = full dissociation
- Weak acid = partial dissociation
- Ka is a number which expresses this
- Ka = (products/reactants)
- Students don’t know how to identify strong v weak
- [H+] means molarity of H+ in solution
- pH = -log[H+]
- pH = quick way to show how much is in solution
Day 2 – Examples of calculations
- Kw and autoionization of water
- determining pH, pOH
- acid / base reactions and the final pH of solution
Textbook Practice
- Ch. 14 (38, 41, 45, 51, 57, 61)
- Ch. 4 (69-72)
