CH30 – The Curve

curveball

Date

  • Tuesday, March 27th

Recap – pH

  • main ideas
  • homework questions?

New Idea – pH after a Reaction

  • pH of a solution after a reaction
  • perform standard calculations
  • determine leftover amount of [H+] or [OH-]
  • calculate pH
  • NOTE: strong acid / strong base

Example

  • 15.0 mL of 0.125-M HCl
  • 3.0 mL of 0.113-M NaOH added
  • determine pH afterwards
  • Textbook support: p. 727-730
  • Extra support here [LINK]

Extending

  • calculate pH of solution for various amounts added
  • 0.0 mL, 3.0 mL, 6.0 mL … 27.0 mL, 30.0 mL
  • plot graph: x-axis = volume NaOH added, y-axis = pH

Homework

  • Finish activity
  • One per student
  • Supporting calculations on separate page

Virtual Lab

  • We will be conducting the virtual lab
  • Be sure it is installed properly
